The JD is no longer the ticket it once was to a stable career and high earnings. With skyrocketing levels of student debt and limited job opportunities, potential law students are foregoing legal careers. And with depleted budgets and enrollment at a 40-year low, law schools are scrambling to remain relevant.

Alice Armitage is an Associate Professor and Director of the Startup Legal Garage at the Institute for Innovation Law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law. During her course of her career, she was the first woman Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law Journal (Class of ’80), spent years at Arnold & Porter and the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and co-founded a mobile safety app, for which she acted as CEO.

Robin Feldman is the Harry & Lillian Hastings Professor and Director of the Institute for Innovation Law at UC Hastings College of the Law. She created the Startup Legal Garage, which has been named one of the most innovative law school programs in the country and was recognized by the American Association of Law Schools as one of the nation’s “Innovative & Other” Outstanding Programs.
